What Does “Class 3 Impact Rated” Actually Mean?

It’s called the “UL 2218” test. And it measures how well roofing materials can withstand real-world hail impacts. The test involves dropping bona fide steel balls of different sizes onto the roofing material from varying heights… and then inspecting the damage. That’s (in essence) the test.

- For shingles to be classified as “Class-3,” they must survive (without damage) a 1.75-inch steel ball (about the size of a large walnut) that’s dropped from 17 feet.
